Tragedy Strikes Bengaluru's Scientific Community

BENGALURU — A 47-year-old senior scientist attached to the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) died by suicide last week after plunging from a residential apartment building in Seegehalli, East Bengaluru. The tragic incident has triggered a police investigation and renewed public discourse surrounding workplace stress, mental health management, and high-pressure environments within premier Indian research institutions.

The deceased, identified as Sharad Katiyar, served as a senior scientist within the programming department of the ADA and was actively associated with the prestigious Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk2 program. Katiyar resided with his family on the fourth floor of a local residential complex.

According to the official police complaint filed by the victim's family, Katiyar had been struggling under severe work-related stress and mental exhaustion for over a month. The sustained pressure reportedly took a heavy toll on his mental well-being, leading him to seek medical assistance at a private hospital, where clinicians diagnosed him with a depressive episode. Despite seeking professional help and commencing treatment, the family alleged that the intense workplace pressure remained unabated.

Records indicate that Katiyar visited the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) for a psychiatric consultation on October 21, where he was formally prescribed medication.

Sequence of Events and Police Action

Preliminary investigations reveal that the incident occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm. Katiyar reportedly walked to the stairwell landing situated between the fourth and fifth floors of the apartment complex before jumping through a window. He sustained catastrophic injuries from the fall.

Promptly alerted by the noise and commotion, family members and fellow residents rushed him to a nearby private facility in K.S. Halli. However, he was declared dead on arrival by the attending medical staff.

Local law enforcement authorities registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, based on the initial formal complaint lodged by the family. Investigators conducted a comprehensive scene inspection on October 22 and completed necessary legal formalities, including the inquest procedure at the hospital mortuary. Formal statements have been recorded from Katiyar's wife, as well as his parents, Suresh Chandra and Sudha Katiyar, as the investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy continues.

ADA Responds to Family Allegations

Addressing the media and mounting public concern, Krishna Rajendra, Director of Administration and Human Resources at the ADA, stated that the organization had no prior knowledge or formal intimation regarding any excessive workplace difficulties faced by the scientist.

"We were not aware of any such issue. I spoke to a few of his colleagues, and they also said they were not aware," Rajendra noted, emphasizing that the agency has actively conducted mental stress management programs for personnel over the past year.

While acknowledging that meeting tight project deadlines involves inherent work pressure, Rajendra expressed skepticism that professional responsibilities alone constituted the sole catalyst for the tragedy, suggesting that underlying health factors may also have contributed. He maintained that standard working hours at the facility typically span from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm and noted that Katiyar had been attending office regularly.

Rajendra added that administrative checks revealed no record of Katiyar filing medical reimbursement claims through official channels, despite outpatient care being eligible for coverage under institutional policies. Describing the loss as profoundly unfortunate, the administration reiterated that official channels remain open for employees facing personal or professional challenges.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, distress, or thoughts of self-harm, please reach out to national helpline services or professional mental health providers immediately.
