Stakes High for Congress and INDIA Bloc Ahead of Mega Ramlila Maidan Protest
The Congress and the INDIA bloc are gearing up for a high-stakes mega protest at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan amid confrontations with authorities and pushback from local traders.

High-Stakes Show of Strength
A lot is riding on the upcoming November 1 rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan for the Congress party, particularly leader Rahul Gandhi, as well as the broader INDIA opposition bloc. The coalition has billed the event as the centerpiece of its campaign targeting the Chief Election Commission and demanding accountability, with organizers aiming to assemble over a million attendees.
However, the run-up to the demonstration has faced a series of logistical hurdles and mounting tensions with local authorities and business owners.
Venue Battles and Permission Denials
Plans for the protest have seen repeated friction with the administration. Initially, the Congress had scheduled a 'mock parliament' event for October 28, intending to lead into the main rally. The venue was later shifted to the Ashok Hotel in New Delhi, but permission was ultimately denied, reportedly due to its proximity to the Prime Minister's residence.
Subsequent proposals by the party to hold the mock parliament at Ramlila Maidan on November 30 have also faced resistance, with party officials stating that Delhi Police clearance has yet to be granted.
Clash with Local Trade Associations
Beyond administrative hurdles, the Opposition is contending with strong pushback from local traders' associations. Business owners in surrounding markets have expressed severe concern that a massive influx of people and vehicles will choke traffic during the peak festive shopping season, severely hurting commerce.
Traders have formally appealed to Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leadership to postpone the rally until after Diwali, warning of severe commercial disruption.
Leadership Defends the Mobilization
Responding to the concerns raised by the merchant community, Rahul Gandhi placed the onus squarely on the central government, arguing that state-imposed lockdowns, road closures, and security restrictions are the primary drivers of public and economic inconvenience.
"We value you and have heard your concerns," Gandhi stated in a public response to the traders' appeal, emphasizing that the overarching fight is directed against administrative policies and electoral integrity.
Despite the local pushback, the Congress high command remains fully committed to the schedule. Senior organizers, including General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal, have intensified coordination efforts across neighboring states, assigning specific mobilization targets to ensure a strong turnout that can validate the opposition's political momentum moving forward.
