Supreme Court Reserves Order on Delhi-NCR Firecracker Ban, Suggests Involving Virat Kohli for Youth Awareness
The Supreme Court has reserved its order on the firecracker ban in Delhi-NCR, expressing frustration over enforcement and suggesting celebrity involvement like Virat Kohli to raise youth awareness.

Supreme Court Questions Enforcement of Firecracker Bans
NEW DELHI — The Supreme Court of India has reserved its order on whether firecrackers should remain banned in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) during the upcoming Diwali festival. Expressing deep frustration over the persistent flouting of its previous directives, a bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale remarked that judicial orders concerning seasonal pollution control have increasingly become an "academic exercise."
The bench underscored that existing prohibitions on fireworks are violated far more frequently than they are obeyed, prompting the judiciary to explore innovative approaches to tackle severe seasonal air pollution. "Every year, we pass orders on the issue... Our orders are violated more often than they are followed," the bench observed, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic interventions that go beyond routine annual bans.
Demands for Strict Accountability from Authorities
During the hearing, the apex court came down heavily on government machinery over the lack of comprehensive compliance reports following previous judicial orders. The judges mandated that future enforcement updates must incorporate granular data, including details of deployed inspection teams, specific locations visited, inspection dates, and empirical data collected on the ground.
Furthermore, the bench specifically directed authorities to crack down on the illegal sale and distribution of imported Chinese firecrackers, demanding strict penal action against vendors flouting environmental regulations. "We want to know about the enforcement steps—the prosecutions, what action has been taken against violators... every year we pass orders and it is not followed," Justice Sundresh stated.
Promoting Eco-Friendly Celebrations and Youth Engagement
When Additional Solicitor General Aishwaria Bhati submitted that a blanket ban might not be a comprehensive solution to the complex pollution crisis, the court agreed that traditional festivals should be enjoyed responsibly, highlighting that Diwali fundamentally remains a festival of lights.
In a novel recommendation, the bench suggested integrating environmental education into school curricula and leveraging the influence of prominent public figures—specifically naming sports personalities like Indian cricketing icon Virat Kohli—to spearhead awareness campaigns aimed at sensitizing the younger generation.
"The present generation is a little sceptical. The earlier generation wants to celebrate. We have to see beyond. We will pass a balanced order, but the question is how far it is implemented," the court noted, pointing toward the necessity of cultural and behavioral shifts alongside administrative enforcement.
