Courtroom Drama Unfolds in Mumbai

Chaos erupted inside a courtroom of the Bombay High Court on Tuesday after a litigant, distressed by an eviction-related ruling against her family, broke down and attempted to hurl her purse at the presiding judge.

The incident occurred during the proceedings of a contempt petition filed by a landlord against Minder Gurmit Singh Thukral and her family. The matter was being heard by Justice Madhav Jamdar.

According to court records, the dispute centers around a long-standing property battle. A formal eviction decree was executed against the Thukral family in April 2005, but the occupants had allegedly re-entered and illegally reoccupied the premises.

Strong Judicial Condemnation

When Justice Jamdar ruled against the family during Tuesday's hearing, Thukral broke down, began screaming in the courtroom, and made a physical attempt to throw her purse toward the bench.

Justice Jamdar strongly condemned the behavior, labeling it entirely inappropriate and a direct contempt of court. The bench emphasized that receiving an adverse legal ruling does not justify disruptive or disrespectful conduct within the judicial system.

"What kind of conduct was this? Do the litigants think they can do anything they wish to, with the court? Just because some order is passed against you doesn't mean you will behave in such a manner," Justice Jamdar observed during the proceedings, adding that the judiciary will not render decisions out of fear or favor.

Strict Legal Consequences

Following the outburst, police personnel deployed within the courtroom intervened and escorted the woman outside.

Although Thukral subsequently submitted a written apology to the bench, the court indicated that a heavy penalty would be imposed alongside formal contempt proceedings to send a strong message regarding courtroom decorum.

In tandem with the contempt measures, the court directed the Court Receiver to take symbolic possession of the contested premises by Wednesday and officially hand it over to the landlord by Thursday. The matter is slated for further hearings on Friday.
