Escalating Violence in Yemen: Saudi Airstrikes Kill 12 in Taiz, Alleges Houthi Health Ministry

Mounting Casualties in Western Yemen

SANAA/TAIZ — The conflict in Yemen has taken a devastating civilian toll once again, with Houthi authorities reporting that a Saudi-led coalition airstrike on a residential area in the western Taiz province has killed 12 people and left three others in critical condition.

The strikes hit homes belonging to local families in Al-Barah, located within the Maqbana district, according to an official statement released by the Houthi health ministry via the Saba news agency. The latest casualties come amid a sharp and dangerous escalation in hostilities following the total breakdown of a landmark 2022 truce earlier this summer.

The Collapse of Fragile Peace

The fragile cease-fire, which had brought a measure of relief to war-weary Yemenis, unraveled after months of friction centered on disputed airspace and economic controls. Tensions boiled over when the Houthi movement permitted an international Iranian aircraft to land in the capital Sanaa, defying Saudi-enforced airspace restrictions.

Since the collapse of the truce, the warring factions have engaged in relentless cross-border and domestic strikes. The Houthi leadership has notably intensified its campaign against targets inside Saudi Arabia, implementing a maritime blockade in the Red Sea and striking vital energy and infrastructure sites.

Dire Humanitarian Crisis

United Nations humanitarian agencies report that the resumption of heavy hostilities has claimed more than 1,600 lives and forcibly displaced over 275,000 civilians. The compounding violence threatens to reverse years of painstaking diplomatic engagement.

Just a day prior to the Taiz strikes, Houthi officials claimed separate coalition airstrikes struck a petrol station and local market, killing at least 14 people. In retaliation, Houthi forces launched drone and missile attacks targeting the airport in Aden, a key stronghold of the internationally recognized, Saudi-backed Yemeni government.

As the cycle of retaliation deepens, international monitors warn that the humanitarian situation in Yemen—already rated as one of the worst global crises—will continue to deteriorate unless diplomatic channels are urgently revived.
