Karnataka Minister's Defense of Voter List Revision Triggers Political Firestorm, Exposing Intra-Party Fractures
Karnataka Minister Satish Jarkiholi has defended the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists, contradicting national party leadership and drawing sharp BJP attacks.

Intra-Party Disconnect Exposed
NEW DELHI — A major political controversy has erupted within the Congress party after Karnataka Cabinet Minister Satish Jarkiholi openly defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in his state, directly contradicting the national leadership's stance. Jarkiholi asserted that the electoral exercise was conducted properly in Karnataka, attributing the smooth process to the rigorous training of party cadres rather than any systemic manipulation.
The remarks have provided fresh ammunition to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which swiftly seized on the comments to target senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The BJP accused the opposition of hypocrisy, arguing that even regional Congress leaders recognize the imperative of maintaining clean voter rolls, thereby undermining Gandhi's ongoing anti-SIR campaign.
Clash of Narratives Over Voter Deletions
Addressing the deletion of nearly one million names from the electoral rolls in Karnataka, Jarkiholi maintained that the Election Commission had correctly identified and removed duplicate, deceased, and relocated voters. This viewpoint sharply contrasts with the narrative advanced by state Congress chief BK Hariprasad, who had previously alleged that the SIR exercise was deliberately engineered to uproot democratic foundations in regions where the BJP lacks a traditional base.
The divergence in messaging has created an awkward PR challenge for the opposition, particularly given the timing. The Congress party and its INDIA bloc allies have scaled up nationwide protests against the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, scheduling massive demonstrations and a "People's Impeachment" forum in the national capital.
Party Colleagues Push Back
Jarkiholi's public defense has drawn immediate internal criticism from fellow party members. Cabinet colleague Priyank Kharge openly questioned the basis of Jarkiholi's assertions, citing localized irregularities. Kharge pointed to specific instances in constituencies like Chittapur, where Returning Officers allegedly uncovered bulk submissions of pre-printed Form 7 applications targeting voters from a single community, raising questions about the procedural integrity of the deletions.
As the opposition prepares for a major show of strength at Delhi's Ramlila Grounds, the internal friction over the SIR process threatens to dilute the unified messaging of the INDIA bloc, forcing party leadership to manage conflicting public stances from key regional figures.
