Campaign Launch in Malwa Region

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is scheduled to visit Sangrur on November 4 to spearhead the party's early preparations for the 2027 Punjab assembly elections. The strategic move marks the launch of a fresh phase of the party's grassroots outreach from the politically critical Malwa region.

Punjab Congress chief Pargat Singh confirmed the upcoming itinerary, emphasizing that the choice of Sangrur carries profound political symbolism. As the home district of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann—who represented the Lok Sabha constituency prior to assuming office—Sangrur serves as a key stronghold for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Strategic Importance of Malwa

Malwa stands as the most electorally significant region in Punjab, accounting for 69 of the state's 117 assembly seats, which translates to roughly 59 percent of the total house. Historically, the region acts as a decisive battleground for any political outfit aspiring to form the government in Chandigarh.

During the 2022 assembly elections, the Malwa region was central to AAP's landslide victory, with the party capturing 66 of the 69 contested seats. By choosing this territory to inaugurate its election roadmap, the Congress aims to mount a direct challenge to the ruling dispensation in its most formidable stronghold.

Grassroots Mobilization and Opposition Pressure

The upcoming visit is expected to focus heavily on worker mobilization, organizational restructuring, and sharpening the party's political narrative against the state government. Pargat Singh urged party leaders and cadres to unify their efforts behind public-centric issues and prepare thoroughly for Mission 2027.

Meanwhile, the political landscape in Punjab remains intensely active, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also intensifying its outreach through high-profile visits by senior national leaders like Union Home Minister Amit Shah, bringing governance and local security challenges to the forefront of public discourse.
