House Democrats Demand Independent Special Counsel to Investigate Trump's Ties to Jeffrey Epstein
House Judiciary Committee Democrats have released a 53-page report calling for a special counsel to probe Donald Trump's historical ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

Congressional Democrats Press for Special Counsel Investigation
House Judiciary Committee Democrats have formally called for the appointment of an independent special counsel to investigate President Donald Trump's historical ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The demand comes via a sweeping 53-page report released by committee Democrats, injecting the contentious issue squarely into the political landscape weeks ahead of crucial midterm elections.
The report revives longstanding allegations of sexual misconduct made against the president, pointing to his past social proximity to the disgraced financier who died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving minors.
The Battle Over the 'Epstein Files'
The push for a special counsel follows months of legal and political maneuvering surrounding the Department of Justice's handling of investigative records concerning Epstein. Although President Trump initially contested the release of the documents, he eventually signed congressional legislation mandating their publication.
The resulting documents contain numerous references to the 80-year-old president. However, Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and prosecutors have not filed any criminal charges against him in connection with the Epstein network.
Accusations Against the Justice Department
Representative Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, sharply criticized the current leadership of the Justice Department, accusing officials of attempting to shield the executive branch.
"Five women have directly accused Trump of rape or sexual assault in Epstein's company or presence," Raskin stated during the committee's briefing. Lawmakers argued that Attorney General Todd Blanche—who previously served as Trump's personal attorney—is inherently compromised and unlikely to pursue an independent investigation.
"Determined to protect the President at any cost, DOJ itself now leads the cover-up of Epstein's sex trafficking operation," committee Democrats asserted in the report, demanding that an independent prosecutor examine not only the president but all potential co-conspirators.
Broader Political Impact
With control of Congress hanging in the balance ahead of upcoming elections, political campaigns have increasingly focused on the fallout from the Epstein files. Reports indicate that Democratic committees and aligned political groups have invested heavily in advertising campaigns centered on the controversy.
To date, Ghislaine Maxwell remains the sole individual convicted in connection with Epstein's criminal operations. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year federal prison sentence following her 2021 conviction for supplying underage girls to the financier, whose extensive network among powerful political, corporate, and cultural figures continues to generate intense public and legal scrutiny.
