Security Incident Forces Redeye Flight to Turn Back

LAS VEGAS — A United Airlines flight carrying 150 passengers was forced to make an emergency turnaround shortly after takeoff on Saturday night, following a midair security scare involving alleged terroristic threats, authorities said.

The scheduled redeye flight, which had departed from Las Vegas and was bound for Newark, New Jersey, returned to the airport less than an hour into the journey, according to flight tracking data from Flightradar24.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that a 25-year-old male passenger was taken into custody immediately upon the plane's safe landing.

Criminal Complaint Details the Threat

According to a criminal complaint filed in the case, the suspect allegedly communicated a threat while midair. Investigators state that the man wrote a message declaring he was going to hijack the aircraft and target a specific row.

While the document does not publicly detail how the message was transmitted or the exact intended recipient, it triggered immediate protocol among flight crew and security personnel.

Police in Las Vegas detained the individual upon arrival, booking him on serious charges. He faces counts of making a threat or providing false information regarding an act of terrorism—a felony offense that carries a potential prison sentence ranging from one to 20 years.

Airline and Federal Response

United Airlines confirmed the emergency diversion in an official statement, noting that the flight returned safely to Las Vegas to address a "potential security concern." Passengers faced an overnight delay before the flight successfully departed for Newark on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed it is launching a formal investigation into the incident. The event underscores a broader ongoing concern for commercial aviation authorities; FAA data indicates that over 1,400 unruly passenger incidents have been officially logged so far in 2026.

The suspect's defense attorney has not yet issued a public statement regarding the charges. An initial court appearance has been scheduled for Tuesday.
